ARTAS – Art Archives Study. Before and after 2004.

As part of the ARTAS project, we have launched a blog where we gradually publish the results of workshops, interviews and new database intersections with project partners basis wien and Moderna galerija Ljubljana.

From January 2023, we are collaborating with two art archives – basis wien Documentation Centre for Contemporary Art (Vienna, Austria) and Moderna galerija’s Archives Department (Ljubljana, Slovenia) on a two-year project ARTAS - Art Archives Study. Before and after 2004.

The starting point of the project is the year 2004, the period of the greatest enlargement of the European Union to date. With the accession of ten new member states, including the Czech Republic and Slovenia, the political, economic and social relationsamong the states changed. The colaborative project explores how this historical moment has influenced contemporary art in this environment. Based on the materials stored in our three archives and the intersecting information in our three databases, we are reaching out to the key actors of the selected period.

First workshop took place in Vienna on 3 + 4 April 2023, organized by basis wien, second workshop was held on 21 + 22 August 2023 in Ljubljana, organized by Moderna galerija.

In our first Blogpost you can read about preparation of queries to databases, possibilities for the visualization of the data, data comparison and analysis strategies.

You can also read about the documents prepared by basis wien from their archives.

These documents show very interesting Austria's strong link between business interests and cultural engagement in "Central Eastern Europe" around 2004, precisely in the context of EU enlargement. These include the expansion of Baumax company and the related Essel Art Award, the expansion of the banking house Erste Bank and the related tranzit.org initiative and the Contact Collection itself, as well as major exhibition shows by the BAWAG Foundation and the insurance company Generali Foundation, among others.

The project is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union (2023–2024) and Czech Recovery Plan.
